One thing I know for sure is you can never imagine the impact someone can have in your life when you first meet them. As the vocalist for Beasley's Big Band, I met Ruben Haugen (saxophone/clarinet), Roger Bartlett (trombone and upright bass), and Mel Carter Sr (trumpet/piano). As they moved into their seventies, they still wanted to play but were no longer up for the rigors of playing with a 19-member big band. I was so thrilled when they wanted to play with me in a jazz combo setting. The rest is history.
